5 Ways to Use a 2-Wheel Trailer Sprayer in Lawn Care

Great for lawns, pastures, golf courses and athletic fields, here we’ll explore five ways to use a 2-wheel sprayer that you may not have considered. Have other ideas? 1.) Snow Removal

Our friends up north could use the 2-wheel trailer sprayer for snow removal in the winter months, as this model doubles as a de-icing/anti-icing sprayer. After all, not all de-icing jobs are highways. Keep areas like driveways, sidewalks and parking lots safe and free of ice. Just add a de-icing solution to the tank and go to town clearing a path with 12’ booms in action. Use the boomless nozzle to spray frozen tires on your vehicle too. It’s a great tool to increase safety and access in the winter.

2.) Watering

An obvious choice, the 2-wheel trailer sprayer is a great resource for watering. With this product on hand, all you have to do is fill up the tank and be on your way watering large areas with the 12’ boom option. We’ve even seen some customers who tow the 2-wheel sprayer behind a mower, allowing them to multitask by watering at the same time as they cut the grass. Talk about efficient. Using the spray gun option you can easily spray trees and have a tank full of water at the ready for multiple stops.

3.) Fertilizing

Using the 2-wheel trailer sprayer to fertilize commercial, residential and recreational areas is a practical alternative to walk-behind rotary fertilizers. It’s also a time-saving option and has shown that this type of application results in applying product more consistently for the job since employees become less fatigued than they might otherwise with the push options. On top of that, using a liquid fertilizer reduces potential runoff and allows for more chemical control.

4.) Herbicides

These sprayers are a great option for herbicide application, or weed control, by allowing you to spray a pre-emergent herbicide to an entire lawn using the boom, as just one example. After all, there are a variety of herbicides used to combat a variety of weeds, in order to achieve a healthy lawn.

5.) Insecticides

Pest control is a popular use for the 2-wheel trailer sprayer within the lawn and landscape segment as outdoor spaces are often threatened by a multitude of pests. With a two-wheel sprayer, folks can easily apply an insecticide across an entire lawn or planter area using the 12’ boom or boomless nozzle.

There are a variety of other uses for the 2-wheel trailer sprayer that delivers high pressure to spray trees or shrubs, high-volume for turf spraying, high flotation turf tires roll easily, and it’s wide stance keep the sprayer stable on most terrains.

Choose the Right Roller Pump

Hypro roller pumpChoosing the right roller pump for your sprayer and application needs can be tricky. After all, the pump is the heart of the sprayer and roller pumps are the top all-around choice for agriculture and industrial spraying. This includes turf spraying of herbicides and pesticides, liquid fertilizers and many other liquids. These spray pumps have a low initial cost and are pretty versatile too. Still, there’s no one solution that meets everyone’s needs making the search for the best solution at times mystifying.

Before we get into the nitty gritty, it’s important to note the basics. A roller pump has 4 to 8 rollers depending on the model, that revolve inside the pump housing to force the spray solution out to the nozzle. These pumps operate at PTO speeds of 540 and 1000 rpm – a definite point to note for choosing the right pump. Roller pumps have a pressure range up to 300 psi and flow rates up to 74 gpm. These products are self-priming and easily adapt to PTO or gas engine drives. These pumps require no check valves while providing positive displacement characteristics. Got it? Good. Now let’s get into choosing the right roller pump.

Consider this real-life scenario that one of our customers shared with us:

“I bought a used 55 gallon tank sprayer with wand and boom for spraying weeds and fire control. It had a 4 roller pump on it that quit/froze a year and a half ago. I replaced with another 4 roller pump and this spring it froze again. The sprayer has a 3hp Briggs motor with a 5/8'' shaft. I would like to know if I can use a larger pump and/or what you would suggest.”

Know the answer? If not, take a look at the steps below for easy identification of the roller pump that will meet your needs. Or skip ahead and check out the solution for this particular scenario.

3 Steps for Pump Selection:

1.) Determine your highest spraying pressure (psi).

For spray guns, 40 psi is often typical at the nozzle, but to properly select a pump that can deliver the right spray pressure, you should calculate it yourself. Keep in mind that pressure losses are normal and should be factored into the equation. It’s recommended that you add 120 psi for system pressure losses.

2.) Calculate the total pump flow (gpm) using the formula below.

Now you’ll need to know the boom flow and agitation for that calculation. You can determine your boom flow (gpm) by multiplying the gpm per nozzle by the number of nozzles. The flow required for agitation is a little easier as that is determined by tank size. For a 500-gallon tank you’re looking at 25gpm, 750-gallon tank will be 37 gpm, 1,000-gallon tank at 50 gpm and 1,500-gallon tank at 75 gpm.

3.) Choose the pump based on the manufacturer’s catalog performance charts.

Sounds simple, but in addition to the numbers you just crunched you’ll also want to keep chemical compatibility in mind. Specific seal, roller and casting materials can be selected for compatibility with certain herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers. The three housing material options – Cast Iron such as the Delavan line, Ni-Resist or Silver (for these purposes we’ll be referring to Hypro’s Silver Series XL roller pumps) – are particularly important for total pump life. Studies have shown, especially with weed control chemicals such as Roundup that the Silver Series XL line is more durable and affords a 10x longer pump life.

Now back to our example. This customer had a standard gas engine without gear reduction. In that case, the best solution was to replace the pump with another 4 roller pump (product 4101C) and keep an eye on maintenance for better long-term wear. Another solution would have been to use a different model, but that would have resulted in purchasing a gear reduced engine. In the long run, this customer was better off just replacing the pump with the same model.

We’re always looking for ways to make spray nozzle selection easier and we’ve shared some tips of the trade in past posts right here on our blog. With new advances in technology and an ever-evolving line-up of options, we couldn’t resist sharing this Spray Nozzle Selection Guide and helpful information from our friends at Hypro.

Consider this. When selecting nozzles it’s easy to determine what droplet and flow rate you need, but what happens when the chemical you are spraying changes? Does that change the nozzle you should be using?

Hypro has developed a simple set of tools that will help steer you to the correct nozzle technology while considering multiple tank mix characteristics. The Spray Nozzle Selection Guide will walk you through a series of questions to identify the correct nozzle, including:

  • What and when are you spraying?
  • Are you using an adjuvant, and if so, what type?
  • In your chemical Contact or Systemic?
  • Is your primary concern drift or coverage?

From there you’ll determine which of six nozzles are best for your application. Choices include Hi-Flow and ESI Six Stream, which are best for Fertilizer Plant Nutrients. Those spraying Herbicides and doing Weed Control would be served best with the Ultra Lo-Drift, Guardian or GuardianAir nozzle types, according to the guide. Rounding out the bunch are the Insecticide/Fungicide Plant Health needs that are best suited by using the Guardian, GuardianAir or GuardianAir Twin nozzles.

Customer Spotlight: Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT)

UDOTThe Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has the responsibility to plan, construct and maintain the state highway system. The state reported 45,881 total public road mileage, including state, county, city, forest service, national park service, native American and other roadways. That’s a lot of surfaces for the 13th largest state by size in the United States. To keep those roadways in tip top shape, UDOT uses a variety of equipment including, as you may have assumed, sprayers.

So we asked the Urban Area Supervisor for his insight on how sprayers are use in his line of work.

1. What type of spray equipment does the UDOT use?
We have several types of equipment that are used here from 250-350 gallon tanks in urban areas and up to 2,000 gallon tanks in rural areas. Smaller tanks are operated from our maintenance one-ton trucks with the large tanks mounted in our ten-wheeler trucks. We also use an ATV mounted sprayer with a small tank to get the areas that are not accessible by trucks. Plus, we have hose reels, side bar sprayers, and boom buster sprayers that spray up to 35'.

2. What is typically being sprayed?
We are using pesticides and herbicides for weed control and vegetative management. We are targeting our areas that have noxious weeds like Kochia, Thistles, White Top and nuisance weeds.

3. Who is in charge of maintaining the spray equipment?
Our station maintenance personnel who hold an applicators license take care of the equipment that they are using. If it is a major repair, then we have our region maintenance shop fix the problem.

4. What months of the year do you use spray equipment?
We start using our equipment in March and will spray into June. Then we have areas that spray in September and October.

5. What are the general responsibilities of the DOT?
Our general responsibilities are preserving infrastructure, maintaining our roadways, and keeping roads and interstates clean and safe for our traveling public. Doing all we can to help with zero fatalities.

6. Are there custom-sprayers in your fleet?
Yes, we have built custom over the years.

7. How often is the spray equipment used? (Daily? Weekly?)
It’s used weekly in our peak seasons. We have also used these sprayers for maintenance operations where water is need to help the activity.

8. Do you typically place orders for sprayer parts and accessories on the website? Or is the order phoned in?

5 Things You Can Do to Get Your Sprayer Ready for Spring

Is your sprayer ready to rock-and roll?  Now's the time to make sure all your spray equipement is in top condition.  Precision is key, especially when considering that many of today's pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are more concentrated formulas than in the past, therefore requiring precise application. Do these 5 things to ensure your sprayer is in tip-top condition:

  1. Clean spray nozzles (you can use an air compressor to clean out the gunk), check their flow rates, and replace any that are spraying more than 10 percent of the original output

  2. Clean the sprayer tank thoroughly and make sure nozzle filters are clean

  3. Check the agitator in the tank to make sure it’s working properly pull behind sprayer

  4. Run water through the spray system to make sure everything is working properly

  5. Check your tires to make sure they are inflated to the manufacturer's specifications

It's also a good idea to stock up on parts and accessories, so that down-time is reduced if a repair is needed during the season. Don't forget the spray hose!
