Posted by Sprayer Depot on Fri, May 12, 2017

In today’s technology filled world the only way to get ahead is to jump on the techno band wagon. As a landscaper perhaps advanced technology doesn’t seem like an everyday tool. itimesheet.jpgYou may ask; Who needs a smart phone to mow a lawn? However, there are some really great business apps out there that may save you a lot of time! Check these out a few of our favorites:

Evernote:

What it does: With this app, you can easily take photos, create text and record audio files and upload them to the Evernote servers so you can access them from your smartphone, tablet or any other computer. Further, you can add tags and descriptions to these items. For instance, if you attend a trade show and see a piece of equipment you like, you can take a photo of it, name it and tag it with “equipment I want to buy” for access at a later date.

iTimesheet:

What it does: Contractors can easily keep track of hours spent on a jobsite with this mobile timesheet. Data can be exported via email as an Excel file attachment or in a table inserted directly within the body of an email. There is also an analytic module that includes charts to analyze the time spent for a specific client, project or task to help you take a closer look at how you or a field crewmember spends their time.

Invoice2Go:

What it does: This app allows contractors to invoice directly from their smart device and email it to the customer. A PayPal button can be included in the email in order to encourage even faster payment. The app includes more than 20 invoice templates to choose from, all of which can be customized with a company logo. In addition, the app includes 12 different reports, such as dashboard and sales reports.

GasBuddy:

What it does: This free app helps you find the cheapest gas prices wherever they are—or via a search by city or zip code. GasBuddy keeps an up-to-date record of gas prices by asking users to help out. You earn points and also a daily chance to win $100 of gas by reporting gas prices in your area.

What You'll Need to Combat Gypsy Moths This Season

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Fri, Apr 07, 2017

With the return of spring comes the return of some of our favorite things: sunshine, daffodils, warm breezes, and blue skies. Unfortunately for the North East, it can also mean the return of the dreaded gypsy moth. Gypsy-Moth.jpgAccording to the Boston Globe, “environmental officials are predicting widespread defoliation from gypsy moths again in 2017…[and] forest health specialists are advising people to hire certified arborists or someone licensed to apply… pesticides to bring the population back down to manageable levels.”

About Gypsy Moths

It is one of the most damaging pests because it has the ability to defoliate over a million acres of trees in a single year. Gypsy moths get their name from their ability to stow away on moving objects; dispersal occurs when people transport gypsy moth eggs thousands of miles from infested areas on cars, firewood, household goods, and other personal possessions. They are also often transported on shipments of nursery stock.

It’s the caterpillars that are particularly problematic to homeowners because only the caterpillar stage of the gypsy moth feeds. The caterpillars feed on more than 500 tree species but especially like oak and other hardwoods. They eat the leaves, and can completely strip trees of greenery. This causes the trees to become more vulnerable to damage. These damages then will potentially cause death to the tree if they're harmed repeatedly over a few years.

Fighting Gypsy Moths With the Right Spray Equipment

What do you do if you find these troublesome caterpillars? Pesticides may be the most effective method of reducing the number of larvae and protecting the foliage of trees. However, managing the gypsy moth can be a difficult task if you don’t have the correct equipment because they tend to prefer trees that are taller than the typical pesticide sprayer can handle, with larva usually emerging in trees that are 45-90 feet tall.

The type of equipment needed for this range of tree height are the larger skid and trailer sprayers. For the tallest trees on the property you will need a large capacity Sprayer-for-Gypsy-Moths.jpgsprayer with a long-range. The Kings Sprayer 735 Gallon Skid Sprayer can handle spraying 75-80' in the air. It's great for tree-spraying and can be used in truck beds, utility vehicles, boats and trailers. A slightly more compact option would be a tow-behind two-wheeled sprayer like this one, but its compact size decreases its spray capacity and will only reach tree heights of about 65’.

For smaller trees applying a pesticide using a smaller two-wheeled Kings-Sprayers-200-Gallon-Trailor-Sprayerjpg.jpgsprayer like this 200 Gallon 2-Wheel Sprayer is your best bet. This sprayer can be easily towed behind a utility vehicle and can reach trees with heights in the range of 45’-50’.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service has more information available about the impending descent of the gypsy moth upon our yards and trees, here.

Key Facts You Need to Know About National Pest Management Month

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Fri, Mar 31, 2017

April is National Pest Management Month

April is National Pest Management Month, a public observance National-Pest-Management-Month.jpgcelebrated for nearly 40 years by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) to acknowledge the role pest professionals play in protecting public health and property from significant pest threats.

“Every day, pest professionals work to protect people and properties from the potential diseases and damage caused by pests,” said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs at NPMA. “This industry commitment was brought to light in 2016 when the United States was introduced to a new disease – Zika virus. This, in addition to the countless other pest-related illnesses, such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Dengue fever, Hantavirus and more illustrates that pests are not just an unsightly nuisance, and proper pest control is necessary to reduce and protect against pest threats.” Spring also happens to be the perfect time to for homeowners to pest-proof their homes and take proactive measures to protect their properties.

Pest Control Tips

For the second year in a row, NPMA has partnered with renowned home improvement expert, Bob Vila to offer tips and advice to homeowners on ways they can prepare their homes to defend against spring and summer pests such as termites, stinging insects, mosquitoes and ants. NPMA and Bob Vila offer the following home pest-proofing tips:

  • Conduct an audit of the home’s perimeter, taking note of any cracks, winter damage or termite mud tubes
  •
Seal outside cracks, including entry points for utilities and pipes, with a silicone-based caulk
  •
Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around the foundation and windows
  •
Eliminate sources of standing water around the house and clean clogged gutters
Remove rotted tree stumps, keep mulch at least 15 feet away from the home’s foundation and trim bushes and branches away from the home
  •
In case of an infestation, work with a licensed pest professional to properly identify the problem and determine the best treatment method

About the National Pest Management Association

The NPMA, a non-profit organization with more than 7,000 members was established in 1933 to support the pest management industry’s commitment to the protection of public health, food and property from the diseases and dangers of common household pests. Spray Equipment: Spray Nozzles 101

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Wed, Jun 29, 2016

Nozzles may be small, but they play a critical role in the application of chemicals. Learn all about spray nozzles.pngSelecting the proper size and type of nozzle is an essential step to determine the amount of spray applied to an area. Use the wrong nozzle, and you may over or under spray the solution which will result in an ineffective application.

A few questions that will help you make the best nozzle selection for your particular application include:

1. What's your application type? (i.e., agricultural, pest control, lawn & landscape, etc.)

2. What's the predetermined distribution pattern? (i.e., broadcast, banded, stream, etc.)

3. What's the recommended droplet size?

4. What type of nozzle material is needed to avoid corrosion?

Let's go over a couple of key elements you can apply to answer the questions above:

Application Rate

Consider nozzle orifice size, operating pressure, nozzle spacing and nozzle speed to determine the application rate. A couple of tips to keep in mind include:
  • The smaller the orifice, the smaller the droplet size
  • Small droplets are subject to more drift and evaporation than larger ones
  • Dense areas require higher pressure for the droplet to reach its target
  • Measuring pressure at the boom is the most efficient way to test actual pressure rate
  • Take into account the angle of the spray tips and their height to space the nozzles at an appropriate distance
  • The faster the speed of the application the less solution applied and vice-versa

Pattern Distribution

The pattern distribution should offer accurate coverage when using the appropriate nozzle. The three most common nozzle distribution patterns are:

1. Flat fan pattern nozzles: Ideal for broadcasting application, flat fan are the most widely used pattern nozzles. Hypro offers a wide selection of flat fan pattern nozzles; browse our extensive inventory by clicking here.

2. Cone pattern nozzles: Best suited for banded application but can also be used for broadcasting application. Cone pattern nozzles are particularly useful when spraying crops as they provide better coverage.

3. Flooding nozzles: Perfect for applications where wind-tolerant nozzles are needed. Use flooding nozzles when spraying at lower pressures with a large droplet to minimize drift.

Nozzle Material

Nozzles come in a wide variety of materials such as polyacetal, ceramic, stainless steel or PVDF. Depending on their use and spray solution, nozzles will wear out at different rates. Always check the label of the chemical solution to check for compatible nozzle material. Also, pay close attention to any specific cleaning or maintenance requirement to keep nozzles clean.

Hypro and TeeJet are among our most popular manufacturers of high quality nozzles. They also have many educational resources that can help make the selection process a bit easier for you. Check out these two simple selection guides that will help you identify the correct nozzle:

Ultra Low Volume Sprayers Recommended for Mosquito Control

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Fri, Jun 17, 2016

We were recently featured in a news article by the Orlando Sentinel, the primary newspaper of spray_equipment_mosquito-zika.jpgOrlando, Florida and the Central Florida region. The article titled "On alert for Zika: Orlando pest companies stock up"focused primarily on the Zika outbreak and how local pest control companies are ramping up their services and stocking up on spray equipment to effectively rid of mosquitoes this season. The Business Journals also featured our most recent press release where we highlighted the importance of using the right spray equipment for mosquito control.

Even if the Zika virus is not as prevalent in the U.S. as it is in other parts of the world, we want to be prepared and ready to help you offer the best solutions to customers. The record-breaking temperatures in May and heavy storms of June have made Florida a magnet for mosquitoes. It is no coincidence that summer is the busiest season for the spray equipment industry. No one likes downtime, especially not during the busiest time of the year. This is just one of the many reasons why our inventory is always fully stocked with all spray equipment, parts, and accessories that you may need. We know to expect a large volume of sprayer sales and have appropriate stock levels to accommodate every order. We have already seen an increased demand on ultra low volume (ULV) sprayers. ULV sprayers offer better coverage for mosquito control due to the fine mist they produce, which sticks to even the smallest of mosquito.

If you are looking for reliable and quality foggers and ULV sprayers, we invite you to check out Hudson's product line featured on our website

For the most effective application, our team of experienced Customer Service Technicians recommends coupling a fogger application with perimeter spraying. Why is a fogger not enough? "Mosquito breeding sites are down at ground level. A spot sprayer or a skid sprayer can help spray those hard to reach areas and spray directly around fences, flower beds, and roof lines," Sales Manager, Brandon Grossman states. "The main objective is to be prepared and ready to effectively control mosquitoes, and protect public health with mosquito-control sprayers".

Check out our previous post on best management practices for mosquito control. For more information on the Zika virus, the CDC official website is a comprehensive resource to stay updated on the latest news and learn how to protect your community.
