First things first: be prepared. Here's of list of what you'll need:
Remember your choice of chemical treatment will vary depending upon the issue you are addressing such as pest infestations or disease. Place the chemical treatment into the tank of the high-pressure sprayer, following manufacturer directions.
When spraying trees, it's best practice to place the sprayer in an area that allows you to spray toward the tree limbs at an angle, making sure the chemical is not likely to fall on you. Aiming at an angle also offers the advanctage of allowing the chemical to go between tree branches instead of being blocked by lower branches.
The goal is to adjust the spray so that it sends a focused stream to the height of the tree limbs. In order to avoid tearing the tree's leaves, the sprayer must get the chemical fluid to the proper height, so that the spray stream converts to a fine mist that can coat the branches and leaves.
Cornell University Cooperative Extension published this helpful Tree Spraying fact sheet from The Pennsylvania State University College of Agriculture, Extension Service. While it's intended for a professional pest control audience, the information is useful for all tree spraying applications.
