We consult many of our customers on this issue. As a matter of fact, it's such a hot topic, we're going to repost a popular Blog post from last year:
Custom Build A Sprayer to Fit Your Exact Requirements
How do you pick a Sprayer that will deliver exactly what you need? Some customers will call one of our Customer Service Technicians and say something like "Give me the Kappa 55 Diaphragm Pump with a 9 HP Honda Engine and a 200 Gallon Tank." Others may say something like " I want the little Roller Pump with a 5 HP Honda Engine and the smallest Tank you've got." Often, customers are either buying more than they need, or they buy conservatively and out-grow their new Sprayer in a short period of time. It's important to find the right balance between too much and too little.
Too Little or Too Much?
A customer in the landscaping business named Lee (not his real name) was looking to add a Skid Sprayer to his fleet. He had just picked up three new large accounts that require him to spray ornamentals, all of which can easily be reached from the parking lot. He would not need to go to the back or to the side of each building.
Lee considered two different Skid Sprayers:
-
200-Gallon Skid Sprayer with 10 gpm Diaphragm Pump: This model is equipped with a 5.5 HP Honda engine, a Hypro D30GRGI Diaphragm Pump (9.5 gpm, 580 psi), and a 200- gallon tank. Lee opted to add a Manual Hose Reel with 150' of 3/8" ID Spray Hose. While this sprayer is a little a over his budget, and the gpm and tank size bigger than he requires, Lee figured he could "grow into it".
-
50-Gallon Skid Sprayer with 5 gpm Diaphragm Pump: This model is equipped with a 5 HP GC Series Honda engine, and Udor IOTA-20/GR Diaphragm Pump (5 gpm, 275 psi), and a 50-gallon tank. This sprayer fulfills Lee's current needs, be he is concerned that he will outgrow it within a year or two.
It's important to note that Lee decided not to pursue new accounts that would require tree or lawn spraying. Rather, he would target new accounts with similiar profiles to the three he recently acquired.
The Right Sprayer For Lee
Which sprayer did Lee choose? He decided to go with #2: 50-Gallon Skid Sprayer with 5 gpm Diaphragm Pump, but upgraded to a 100-gallon tank. Now, he can add a Hose Reel with up to 300 feet of spray hose and he has the capacity to take on more work wothout having to run around and refill all day. Plus, it fit within his budget.
