Why Fixing Small Problems with Spray Equipment Now Beats Tackling Big Problems Later On!

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Fri, Oct 06, 2017

Like all machinery and equipment, regular use of spray equipment over time results in normal wear and tear. However, it is also true that regular maintenance and simple repairs or adjustments that are done when needed, prolongs the life and the proper functioning of your machinery and spray equipment. Oftentimes, the minor issues that are left untended, and the lack of routine maintenance of your spray equipment result in major problems that are not only far more costly, but also can have a huge impact on the overall efficiency of your business. Without regular maintenance, minor problems can even develop into or cause additional issues that might require complete replacement of your equipment.

To circumvent these potential problems, we suggest regular check-ups of your spray equipment for issues, and more importantly... fixing any of the minor problems that arise promptly before they become major problems! The following is a helpful summary of some basic maintenance tips that you can use as a reference:

  • Clean and flush all sprayer equipment after use. This very basic (and very simple) rule of thumb could save you from a host of problems that could develop from equipment that may become clogged or damaged from fluids. Flushing your strainer is essential too in order to prevent loss of pressure and contamination.
  • Perform a routine check of your spray tipsChecking your spray tips for any damage can really save you a lot of time and energy Hypro flat fan spray tip.jpgin the long run and is a cinch to do with nothing more than a visual inspection. If you notice any damage, replace the tip as soon as possible.
  • Check your oil levels. It is a smart idea to regularly check your oil levels in your gearbox, pump and engine. If they are low, fill to the appropriate levels.
  • Calibrate your sprayer before storing it. Before putting your sprayer away, make sure to calibrate it to ensure it is delivering the proper application rate.

With basic maintenance of your spray equipment, you can enjoy trouble-free use and efficiency for much longer and without accruing excess costs. To make your maintenance even easier for you, we've compiled a printable step by step guide which you can download here! As always, if you have any questions or need some technical assistance, our Customer Service Technicians are always available to help!

How to Overcome the Top 3 Problems of Tall Tree Spraying

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Wed, May 03, 2017

Spraying tall trees can be tricky business. The need to reach extreme heights can present challenges for spray applicators. At Sprayer Depot, we're always touting the importance of having the right equipment for the job, and this is especially true in tall tree spraying. The "one size fits all" approach does not apply!

tree-spraying.jpgFor example, we get calls from customers who want to use their existing sprayer and simply purchase a new spray gun to spray to further heights.  Unfortunately, this is not how it works: the whole system needs to be adequate.  If you don’t use the right tank, pump, spray hose or spray gun you won’t hit the desired distance.

Here are 3 important things to consider when spraying tall trees:

  1. Pick the right tank size - It's necessary for the tank capacity to be 5 - 6 times the max flow rate of the pump. We recommend the largest tank possible while still fitting space requirements. One of the main issues with using a tank that's too small is that the high flow rate of most pumps will empty a small tank quickly and create cavitation in the lines which leads to decreased performance.
  2. Pick the right pump, spray hose, and spray gun - In order to proper height when spraying tall trees, both flow and pressure are required. So a spray hose with with a diameter large enough that it does not restrict  the flow of the liquid is essential. High pressure will atomize the droplets and allow them to reach increased heights.
  3. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) - PPE protects the body from  hazardous chemicals. To reduce the risk of harm or injury, professional spray applicators should wear face, eye, skin, and hand protection.

Use this helpful guide when determining what equipment to use for tall tree spraying:

What No One Will Tell You About Spray Nozzles

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Fri, Apr 28, 2017

The topic of spray nozzles is an important one for spray applicators and one that's often underappreciated. While spray nozzles may be Hypro-Spray-Tip.jpgamong the least expensive inventory items on your shelf, they are among the most important in the application of chemicals. Since they have a huge effect on the accuracy and efficiency of each spray application, it's important to include them in your equipment maintenance plans and replace them on a regular basis.

When to Change Nozzles

Nozzles come in a variety of materials including stainless steel, ceramic, and polyacetal.  Nozzles will wear out at different rates depending on their use and spray solution. For example, stainless steel nozzles wear almost twice as fast as polyacetal nozzles.  Make sure to check the label of the chemical solution to check for compatible nozzle material.

Another important consideration is the change in spray applications. It's not likely that the same nozzle will work well for all applications.

Nozzles should be routinely inspected for any visible wear-and-tear. If you're observing an interruption in the intended spray pattern, it's most likely an indicator that it's time for a new nozzle.

According to Pentair-Hypro, nozzles should be replaced "if the flow from a nozzle varies more than 10% above or below the average of all the nozzles or the factory stated flow at 40 psi."

Help With Selecting the Right Spray Tip

These helpful selection guides published by Hypro and Teejet (respectively) are excellent tools to help determine which spray tip to use.

The Top Questions From Our Blog: Asked and Answered

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Tue, Apr 25, 2017

These days, information is literally at our fingertips; a quick Google search can find an answer to a question that would have taken hours or even days to research just a few decades ago. At Sprayer Depot, we're on the leading questions-answers-723x334.jpgedge of technology. This is evident in everything from our state-of-the-art inventory management system, to our communication on social channels like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and our commitment to digital media.

We realize that time is money for our customers. The LESS time they have to spend researching how to do a quick equipment repair on the fly, or a reputable parts vendor,  the MORE time they have to service customers and grow their business. So we quickly respond to all questions on our blog, or social channels and post the answers so they can be referenced by anyone.

In this post we'll feature a few questions that have recently been posted to our blog comment box.

Q:  "My Shurflo ATV sprayer pump (pump model #8000-543-936pulsates. What's wrong?" - Tom R.

A: To prevent pulsing try holding down the trigger on the spray wand and adjust the small Allen    screw in the front center of the pump head until the pulsation subsides.

Q: "I bought a used Fimco 55 gallon PTO sprayer. I have a John Deere 1025R tractor and want to use the sprayer to do broadleaf control, liquid fertilizer, and things like that. What roller pump should I use?" - Wes T.

A: We recommend the Hypro 7560XL "Silver Series" Roller Pump. This pump has great flow and  pressure and is cast from a stainless alloy specially designed for pesticides and herbicides.

Q: "My rig is pulsing and has very low pressure. It will start spraying perfectly, but then go back down to low pressure. I tried cranking up the psi, but it didn't  work. I've been working with a very frustrating rig. Please help! There is no clog in  filter..my gun isn't the issue. I think motor is going out, but maybe you can help" - Joe M.

A: Intermittent performance indicates that you may have a bad pressure switch. This switch is located on the front of the pump and has two red wires attached to it. Replacements switches are available for most models.

Q: "I'm starting up our Hypro D503 for the season. It will build up pressure to 400 psi but when I engage the nozzle, it drops below 200 psi or lower but returns to 400 psi once the nozzle is turned off. I've checked and tightened all the connections. Cleaned the strainer on the intake and it's good. Thoughts?" - Chris T.

A: A drop in pressure when engaging the trigger normally indicates an air leak on the suction side. We suggest making sure the suction strainer gasket is set properly to form a tight seal and the bowl is not cross threaded or over tightened. You may also try watching the intake line to see if any air bubbles appear when activating the gun.

If you've got a question about your spray equipment, leave it in the comment box below and we'll get right back to you.

Shhhh... 3 Big Reasons Why You Need an Electric Sprayer

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Tue, Apr 04, 2017

As spring arrives, so do those phone calls from potential clients. If you are receiving a lot of work from clients who live in communities with noise ordinances or Home Owner Associations (HOAs), Kings-Sprayers-Electric-Sprayer.jpgor you simply want to be more considerate to those who live around your job site, you should consider adding an electric sprayer to your inventory. These sprayers are significantly more quiet than many other models and will allow you to get the job done efficiently while being respectful to the neighborhood... at any time of day. Plus, you'll be able to promote this option to potential clients, making you stand out from the competition.

Electric sprayers also offer a few other added benefits:

Electric sprayers allow for a more eco-friendly company. In today’s world where clients are Kings-Sprayers-4-Wheel-Electric-Sprayer.jpgbecoming more and more concerned about environmental issues, it is important to present your company with as “green” an image as possible. Since these sprayers don’t use gasoline they are cleaner than a gas guzzling engine.

Additionally, they often have a lower cost than many gas-powered sprayers. You can get commercial-grade quality, but still save some money if you’re looking for something that can be used in truck beds, utility vehicles, boats and trailers. A 50 gallon skid sprayer offers an economical price but doesn’t lack in efficiency.

Similarly, electric sprayers generally take up less space in the vehicle. Kings-Sprayers-100-Gallon-Electric.jpgThe electric pump & motor is usually smaller than a gas operated sprayer which will allow you to use a smaller vehicle for transport. This 100-gallon model is only 38 inches wide which will leave more space in your truck bed for other equipment.

Silence is golden. If neighborhood of golf course work draws your business this season electric engines will be your best bet as they make almost no noise as opposed to gas-powered sprayers. This can allow you operator to operate earlier in the day without disturbing clients and neighbors or ruining someone’s perfect golf swing. You’d want a model that can be pulled behind a utility vehicle for golf course use, which also has an electric motor to reduce disruptions.

If you’re in need of new or quieter spray equipment this season, let us help you. Talk to one of our knowledgeable Customer Service Technicians at 800-228-0905.
