Equip Your Company With the Latest Spray Equipment for a Successful 2017

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Wed, Feb 22, 2017

Now that the New Year has come and gone, it’s time to stock up for your next busy season. You can set yourself up for success by updating your spray equipment inventory. Need help figuring out what parts or equipment you need? Don't stress out over it. Spray Equipment Inventory Checklist.pngCall us instead. We specialize in providing our customers with the technical and product information to fit all types of spray equipment, even if you didn't buy it from us. In this post let's take a look at some of the top products all spray applicators should have to kick off the spring season:

Commercial Sprayers

We carry the complete line of Kings Sprayers, frankly because we've found that they are among the best sprayers available on the market. Using 6061 lightweight and chemical resistant aircraft grade aluminum frame, Kings Sprayers will never rust or need painting. Whether you're looking at a Kings Sprayer 100 Gallon Skid Sprayer, or a standard Kings Sprayer 25 Gallon Standard Sprayer, we're confident you're going to love your sprayer.

Spray Guns

Looking to replace an old spray gun for something with a more powerful performance? The gold standard for heavy duty spraying is the JD9®-C High Pressure Spray Gun. If your budget won’t allow you to stock up on these top-quality spray guns, an alternative is our Replacement for Greensmaster JD9®-C Spray Gun. At almost half the price of the original model, this product is an affordable option that allows your operation to still get the same performance as the original spray gun. Since the Replacement Gun is a copy of the Greensmaster JD9®-C High-Pressure Spray Gun, it has the same pressure rating and uses the same nozzles and repair kits.

Spray Hoses and Sprayer Accessories

Of course, to reduce downtime it’s always a good idea to to keep sprayer parts and accessories on hand, like high pressure hoses, diaphragms kits and pumps. Some of our customers order a length of hose by the foot for a custom amount, or many choose a pre-selected roll, like this 400 foot roll.

For the do-it-yourselfers who want to give their spray equipment a little TLC, we offer repair kits and many instructional videos to help get your equipment back to tip-top shape. Check out this Diaphragm Pump Repair Kit as an inexpensive option vs. purchasing a new pump.

Remember to keep on hand replacements and sprayer accessories for your fleet of sprayers, like strainers, pressure gauges, and pump oil, to name a few.

Investing in the right equipment can help make 2017 your best year yet. By ensuring your equipment is in excellent working order, your team can tackle even the toughest customers’ needs better and faster than ever so you can get started on the road for another successful and lucrative year in business.

How to Avoid Being Lazy This Winter

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Tue, Jan 31, 2017

That chill that you’re feeling in the air means a number of different things: winter is in full force, it’s time to plan your Super Bowl party, and your business may be smack dab in the middle of its slow season (or at least shifting to another seasonal service). That likely means less use for your spray equipment. Yet before you go covering it with a tarp, ask yourself this question: Have I properly winterized the system to avoid unnecessary equipment repairs in the spring?

Why Winterize?

Why not just store your spray equipment away after your last application and forget about it until spring comes around again? Well, the longer your spray equipment is left inactive, the greater potential there is for it to fail. Any chemicals or residue left in SprayerDepot_Winter.jpgthe system can saturate into soft components such as hoses and valves, weakening them to the point of not functioning properly when you first start your sprayer back up again. Plus, having leftover residue in the system increases the chances of cross-contamination if you use your sprayer for multiple purposes.

For these reasons, winterization needs to be a vital part of your sprayer maintenance program. By not slowing down on your sprayer upkeep during the winter months, you help ensure that your spray equipment's ready to hit the ground running once warm weather returns. Plus, you’ll prolong its operating life and ultimately net a greater ROI.

Winterization in Four Easy Steps

Winterizing your sprayer can be accomplished in four simple steps:

  1. First, read the labels of the compounds you use typically use in your sprayer to see what agents are recommend to clean and neutralizing them. Follow those recommendations as you thoroughly flush both the pump and tank. Any system components that can be removed (i.e., strainer or screens) should be cleaned separately to prevent and residue buildup.
  2. Next, avoid the all-too-common temptation of simply draining the system. Instead, flush the system with clean water. Then drain the tank and open all valves. If possible, use compressed air to blow out any remaining liquid from the solution lines.

  3. Run the pump just long enough to ensure the system is drained of water.

  4. Run antifreeze thoughout the system, making sure it reaches the hoses and booms. We recommend diluting the antifreeze 50/50 with either water or windshield washer fluid.

Cover the sprayer with a tarp so that dirt, insects, etc. can't compromise the equipment and you're done.

When to Winterize

We're often asked about the best time to winterize a sprayer. While we can't provide a specific day or month to answer this question, we recommend that it get done before temperatures drop below freezing. In warm climates where the temperatures don’t drop too much, you should winterize your sprayer before you store it at the end of season.

How to Calibrate Your Spreader Sprayer                                                                  Contributed by Guest Blogger: Martin McGuane, owner and operator of McGuanes Landscaping and Tree Service, Enfield CT

There are few things more important in the chemical lawn care business than ensuring that your spreader sprayer is calibrated. Calibration is the process used to make sure that the spray equipment properly disperses the pesticide at the proper rate.spreader_sprayer.jpg

Why Calibrate Your Spreader Sprayer?

Key reasons why calibration is so important include:

  • Applying a mixture too heavy wastes material and money.
  • Applying a mixture too light will not effectively control your target pests.
  • Operating an uncalibrated sprayer is environmentally irresponsible.

A Brief Overview

There are many factors involved in calibrating a sprayer. You could spend weeks learning about calibration. However, our purpose in this blog post is to provide a simple, yet effective and accurate way to ensure you’re delivering the correct amount of solution.

Steps to Calibrate a Spreader Sprayer

Let’s walk through the quick and easy steps to calibrate a spreader sprayer:

  • Make sure your screen is clean.
  • Set your sprayer to the desired PSI.
  • Set your ground speed.
  • Measure the width of your sprayer bar. For this example, we will assume the sprayer bar measures 7 feet.
  • Determine the amount of feet you will need to spray to get 1,000 square feet of coverage (1000/7 (length of sprayer bar) = 143ft).
  • Add a known quantity of water to your sprayer.
  • Blanket spray the determined length from above (In this case, 143 feet).
  • Once you finish spraying, determine how much water you used.

Determine the Rate

Let’s assume we used 1 gallon on our 1,000 square feet. Let’s also assume that the manufacturer’s recommend rate for your weed killer is 1oz. per 1,000 square feet. Based on this, we know that we will need to mix 1oz. of weed killer per gallon.

determing_mix_rate.png

Keep an Eye on Your Calibration

Once your sprayer has been calibrated you should confirm the calibration regularly throughout the day. Using the example from the previous paragraph, if we are applying a blanket application to a 10,000 sq. ft. lawn, we should be using 10 gallons of dilute. If not, we need to adjust our mix, our speed or possibly our pressure.

Top 3 Benefits of Backpack and Handheld Sprayers

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Wed, Oct 12, 2016

The Right Tools for the Job

In the spray industry, it is essential to have the proper tools for the appropriate tasks, particularly where sprayers are concerned. Backpack and handheld sprayers are Backpack_sprayers.jpgpractical and versatile pieces of equipment and are useful for spraying a wide range of liquid applications, including herbicides, fertilizers, and insecticides.

Advantages and Enhanced Capabilities

Many professional spray applicators give backpack and handheld sprayers little consideration, and stick to using basic models such as the Solo 1 Gallon Handheld Sprayer or the Hudson Commercial Bak-Pak Sprayer. However, advancements in design and technology have made these products more efficient and comfortable to use, therefore warranting further exploration into their various features and benefits.

Top Benefits

There are many new models on the market with more options than ever before on backpack and handheld sprayers. To make sure you include these products in your equipment inventory, we've made a helpful list of the top 3 key benefits of backpack and handheld sprayers:

  1. Versatility. Both backpack and handheld sprayers are efficient, reliable, and durable while offering dependable performance. The ability to meet various application requirements is expanded with the use of these products, and many professional spray applicators keep a few of these products in their equipment inventory.
  2. Energy boost. Battery-operated backpack sprayers employ power from a 12-volt battery supply to the pump. Because the transfer of energy is continuous and the sprayer Hudson_NeverPump.pngpressurizes automatically, you save work and time. These sprayers offer hours of continuous use on a single charge so they make long jobs easier to complete, such as spraying fertilizers or pesticides in nurseries and greenhouses, or spraying turf gardens and small trees with herbicides, pesticides, and other types of fungicides. Battery-operated backpack sprayers are also a great choice for spraying large lawns, fruit trees and more.
  3. High-power. High-pressure backpack sprayers like the Solo motorized backpack sprayer model #433 has the power to achieve fine spray mists, even at extreme heights. There's even a lumbar pad on the the lower back strap to ensure maximum comfort.

More Options Available Than Ever Before

While new backpack and handheld sprayer options  are impressive with advanced performance and capabilities, manually-powered choices will remain industry standards. But the days of thinking of these sprayers as boring, are a thing of the past.

Sprayer Depot offers a wide variety of sprayers to accomplish just about any spray application, from backpack and handheld sprayers to 1,000 gallon air sprayers

See Our New Sprayer Crating Process

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Mon, Aug 29, 2016

To Ensure Every Sprayer Arrives in Perfect Working Condition:

We're pretty excited about the recent launch of our new sprayer crating process. As part of a shipping improvement initiative, we identified that by changing the way we package and wrap sprayers, we could reduce damage that can sometimes occur during the shipping process.

The new crating process ensures the sprayer will arrive in ready to use condition. Prior to crating, our sprayer packaging process involved putting the sprayer on a pallet, wrapping it, then strategically placing foam in fragile areas to reduce shipping damage.

With our new crating process, the goal is to have each sprayer arrive in perfect working condition so our customers can enjoy using their new sprayer immediately upon arrival, reducing downtime and improving productivity.

Steps Involved in Crating a Sprayer for Shipping

Crate components:
photo_1.jpg

Each sprayer crate is built with custom-measured plywood that is specific to each sprayer model, and 2x4 lumber.

Kings Sprayers jpg

Next, each sprayer is placed on a pallet, with a plywood base for added strength.

photo_4.jpg

The next step involves building a customized plywood container around the sprayer.

Moving from a pallet/wrap process to this new crating process better protects the sprayer during shipment, which reduces damages. Along with our QuickShip™ sprayers, which offers same-day shipping on a variety of our most popular sprayer models, this new sprayer crating process is another way we seek to WOW people by exceeding expectations.

Future Initiatives

We're always working on ways to improve our customers' experiences. Got a suggestion for us? Leave it in the comment box below.

If You Liked “Tall Tree Spray Guns” Then You’ll Love This

Posted by Sprayer Depot on Wed, Aug 24, 2016

One of Our Most Popular Blog Posts

"Tall Tree Spray Guns" is one of our most popular blog posts, with more than 4,000 views. We know that selecting the right spray gun for this particular task can be confusing, so in this post we'll highlight a few best practices when spraying tall trees, and focus on a few key features to consider when picking the best spray gun for the job.

treespraying.jpg

First things first: be prepared. Here's of list of what you'll need:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including goggles
  • Chemical application required to treat tree
  • High-pressure sprayer
  • Tall tree spray gun
  • 3/4-inch diameter hose that withstands 800 psi

Remember your choice of chemical treatment will vary depending upon the issue you are addressing such as pest infestations or disease. Place the chemical treatment into the tank of the high-pressure sprayer, following manufacturer directions.

Best Practices

When spraying trees, it's best practice to place the sprayer in an area that allows you to spray toward the tree limbs at an angle, making sure the chemical is not likely to fall on you. Aiming at an angle also offers the advanctage of allowing the chemical to go between tree branches instead of being blocked by lower branches.

The goal is to adjust the spray so that it sends a focused stream to the height of the tree limbs. In order to avoid tearing the tree's leaves, the sprayer must get the chemical fluid to the proper height, so that the spray stream converts to a fine mist that can coat the branches and leaves.

Cornell University Cooperative Extension published this helpful Tree Spraying fact sheet from The Pennsylvania State University College of Agriculture, Extension Service. While it's intended for a professional pest control audience, the information is useful for all tree spraying applications. It offers helpful guides on sprayer selection, hose diameter, nozzle pressure (PSI), along with sprayer maintenance tips.

 Selecting the Right Spray Gun

When choosing a tall tree spray gun, make sure it's capable of outputting the necessary pressure to ensure uniform coverage. There are many high quality spray guns available, and here are a few of our most popular:
